About

Debbie Ausburn began her career as a social worker before going to law school. She has practiced as a civil litigation attorney, a federal prosecutor of crimes against children, and is now back in private practice. She has extensive experience in jury trials, administrative hearings, and appellate proceedings, including successful argument before the United States Supreme Court. Along the way she has served as a foster parent and as a board member with nonprofit youth serving organizations. That combination of frontline experience and legal practice shapes how she approaches every question on this blog.

Debbie is a member of Chalmers, Adams, Backer & Wallen, LLC in Georgia, where she is part the firm’s litigation and independent investigations practice teams. She is the author of Raising Other People’s Children: What Foster Parenting Taught Me About Bringing Together a Blended Family (2021) and co-author, with Tom Rawlings, of Protecting Other People’s Children: 120 Days to Create a Strong Child Safety Policy — a practical guide for administrators and staff of youth-serving organizations.
